Sol Plaatje University gears up for #WomensMonth | News Article

The Sol Plaatje University the Northern Cape is gearing up to hold several events to mark Women’s Month.

This, as the university will on the first of August already host its memorial lecture to highlight the role played by women in the liberation struggle. The Kimberley-based university, which opened its doors in 2014 with only over 100 students, says the month of August not only seeks to celebrate women but also address the many socio-economic issues they face.

The university is gradually increasing its intake and alludes that skills development and empowerment of women is of high importance. The university will host the first public lecture on Nokuthula Simelane who disappeared in 1983 after being arrested by the police during the apartheid regime and taken to the notorious Vlakplaas where she was brutally tortured for several weeks and never seen again.

The university’s Kashini Maistry says the lecture will be co-hosted by the Heritage Department within the School of Humanities and the Student Affairs Department. Amongst those expected to attend is the newly elected president of the South African Local Government Association (Salga), Thembi Nkadimeng.
