Moqhaka municipal manager to appear in court─── 10:15 Mon, 03 Jun 2019
Simon Mqwathi, the Moqhaka Local Municipality’s Municipal Manager, who was arrested last week for fraud, corruption and defeating the end of justice - is this morning expected to appear at the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court.
Mqwathi has been implicated in an alleged dodgy tender fraud deal and was supposed to hand himself to the police last week but decided to be on the run.
While on the run, he posted a video on social media saying he was okay and God was on his side.
After he failed to show up at the local police station, the Hawks stated that they were looking for him and considered him a fugitive.
His arrest comes after Dihlabeng municipal manager, Busa Molatsedi, was arrested a fortnight ago and charged with fraud and corruption. He was released on R10 000 bail.
The Executive Mayors of the troubled Dihlabeng and Moqhaka municipalities say they are confident their arrest of the managers won't affect service delivery. The two managers are linked with a security tender which the police say was allegedly awarded fraudulently.
Both Dihlabeng and Moqhaka municipal executive mayors Lindiwe Makhalema and Lucky Phooko say it would be business as usual at the municipalities and urged communities to let the police do their work.
