An announcement on when the Kimberley Psychiatric Hospital will open its doors is yet to be made.

This, after the Northern Cape Finance MEC, MacCollen Jack, has confirmed the province had not budgeted for operational expenses of the institution hence it is still not open and that they are now joining hands with the National Department of Finance towards the operation of the hospital. Tabling the provincial 2019 budget speech earlier today (on Wednesday), Jack announced that the health department will receive an allocation of R5,2 billion for the 2019/20 fiscal year. He said they are engaging with the national department on the operation of the hospital as the construction phase has been completed and is certain it will soon be opened. The hospital has over the years drew much controversy with opposition parties demanding answers over millions unaccounted for and when it will be opened. It has been under construction for more than a decade.

Health Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, following submissions by forensic auditors to the Public Protector last week, announced that all investigative agencies are investigating the matter and that it was imperative to reach the bottom of the matter and bring those accountable for misappropriation of funds and its delay to book. He said investigations regarding the hospital are in their final stages.

The construction of the 286-bed hospital began in 2006 and it was initially earmarked R290 million to be completed. Its costs have, however, over the years ballooned to nearly R2 billion. The hospital was supposed to be handed over to the provincial health department in 2008, but the project got delayed several times, partly due to legal disputes between contractors and the Provincial Department of Public Works.
