Nehawu has called off its national strike at TVET and CET colleges after signing a settlement agreement with the Department of Higher Education and Training.

The union has expressed gratitude to all its members for remaining resolute in their fight for better salaries, benefits, and improved working conditions. The union's Khaya Xaba has announced that this settlement represents a victory for their members who have allegedly been marginalised by the department. The union and the department have, amongst others, agreed that all employees who have been employed by the department and colleges will now be permanently employed, which will be a victory to close to 3000 workers. It has also been agreed that there be performance bonuses and grade progress payments. The union says all its members are expected to resume with duties as of today.

The two-week long strike saw a number of TVET colleges shut down in the country, including those in the Free State, North West, and the Northern Cape.

During the strike in the Free State, 15 Newahu members were arrested for contravention of a court order at the Motheo TVET College's Hillside View Campus. The group had to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court earlier this week, where they were each granted bail of R500.
