Frustrated FS CUT students boycott classes over NSFAS─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:33 Tue, 19 Feb 2019
Disgruntled students at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein in the Free State are boycotting classes since Monday morning over the unpaid financial assistance by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
This comes in the wake of violent protests that has since gripped the Durban University of Technology (DUT) over the same issues of financial assistance.
OFM News understands that thousands of students who rely on the aid scheme for financial assistance have since been affected and left stranded by this.
A second-year student in Construction Management, who asked not to be named, tells OFM News that they have decided to boycott the classes in protest against the unpaid fees.
He says as a result of this, students are unable to buy their own books while on the other hand they have been furnished with test dates.
He says the CUT management has told students that they will try and fix matters in due course but they have not set out a plan as to how they plan on achieving this.
Students are allegedly planning to end the protest on Thursday, should the matter be addressed fully by the aid scheme and the varsity.
The aid scheme has been battling to put its house in order with students accusing it of fraud and corruption over the years.
A large contingent of students from impoverished households in South Africa bank their hopes on a financial bail-out from the aid scheme.
