Sunflower murder duo to be sentenced in March─── 13:03 Fri, 01 Feb 2019
The Mahikeng court on Thursday postponed the case to March 6 after hearing arguments on aggravation and mitigation of sentence.
Doorewaard and Schutte were last year convicted of the murder of 16-year-old Matlhomola Moshoeu.
The teenager was, according to an eyewitness, pushed off a moving bakkie in 2017 after being accused of stealing sunflowers.
Over the past few days, the court has heard testimonies from Moshoeu's mother, who's calling for life imprisonment.
The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in North West, Tembeka Mdabu, says the defence asked the court for leniency.
"They were asking the judge to deviate from the minimum sentence, putting their reasons as to why they feel that the judge should deviate."
Mdabu says the state asked for the two to each spend 10 years behind bars for kidnapping, two years for intimidation, a year for theft and three years for the pointing of a firearm.
Doorewaard and Schutte will remain behind bars.
