The Kopanong Local Municipality’s workers are allegedly up in arms after the non-payment of salaries and deductions to third parties.

This is according to Regional Secretary in the Xhariep District Municipality, Solomon Matakane, who told OFM News that the municipality has also not been paying the workers’ contributions towards medical aid, insurance, the provident fund, and the pension fund.

Matakane also mentioned that a meeting was held last week Thursday in which it was concluded that the workers will not be paid. He said, however, workers ended up being paid the following day, but the workers are still unhappy, because their contributions are being deducted from their salaries, but they are not being paid over to the relevant third parties.

“This morning there was a meeting with the municipal manager and the mayor. In this meeting we were supposed to discuss some of these issues and how the municipality is going to honour the agreement we had with them previously,” Matakane said.

Matakane added that the Kopanong Local Municipality mayor, Xolile Matwa, objected to the union representatives not being present at the meeting, and left as a result.
