The leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Free State, Patricia Kopane, will conduct an oversight inspection at the Free State Government Mortuary in Bloemfontein this morning with her team.
Kopane said she will engage with the employees at the mortuary to find out how their working conditions are, taking into consideration that the mortuary has huge backlogs due to resource and staff shortages. This inspection follows after her unannounced oversight visit at National Hospital in Bloemfontein and at the Albert Nzula District Hospital in Trompsburg yesterday.
“Basically, I will be engaging there with the employees to find out what the working conditions are? The last time they were complaining about not being given an allowance to assist during post mortem assessments and those other procedures. So definitely, today, my tour will be about listening to the employees and finding out what the challenges are that they face on a daily basis,” Kopane said. She further said that during her last visit to the mortuary last year, she found that staff at the mortuary were unable to study further and even assist in some post mortem assessments as in some cases, these staff members have to perform numerous job functions. Kopane said she requested the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to intervene in this regard so that employees may be able to further their skills.
