No compensation to farmers losing pigs to African Swine Fever, says FS department─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 06:44 Fri, 20 Sep 2019
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Free State did provide resources to ensure the outbreak of African Swine Fever is contained in the province.
Spokesperson of the department, Zimasa Leputla, says especially in terms of the outbreak on a farm near Heilbron, all resources were channeled
towards that farm. Leputla says the department does not work in isolation and assisted the South African Pork Producers Organisation (SAPPO) that were also on site. She says in terms of the culling of infected pigs on the Heilbron farm and neighbouring communal farms, the department assisted SAPPO with the process but did not provide compensation.
