Local artist and art teacher, Liesel Wessels, wants to make Bloemfontein beautiful again with another mural project entitled “Bridge of Dreams”. She said the motivation to undertake this project was the success of the previous mural project.

“Even if it’s not perfect, it’s made an impact. People used it as a background for selfies and music videos, which was the whole purpose of the project.” She said this new project will be much more visible and therefore she hopes it will have an even greater impact.

The theme is slightly different as they will include paint, stickers, and stars that glow in the dark to make the space beautiful at night and day.

“This initiative not only aims to beautify our city but also to promote a stronger sense of community by uniting people from all walks of life in a fun community project. We hope to revive a public space that is currently neglected and transform it into a lively community space for local students and the community in general.”

Members of the community can get involved by volunteering to help with painting, cleaning, or overall security and traffic control. You can also donate paint and old brushes or even help donate items on their list – from drinks for volunteers to black bags.

The project takes place under the Kovsie Bridge in DF Malherbestraat on 11 May from 09:00 to 13:00. “We hope the project will inspire other local creators, artists, architects, or gardeners to make the whole of Bloemfontein their blank canvas so that more similar projects will cover all our ‘ugly’ areas and make Bloemfontein a more beautiful and interesting place.”
