Johannes Stegmann Art Gallery presents ‘Eureka’─── 09:00 Tue, 01 Aug 2023
“Eureka” is a journey delving into artisanal mining in Kimberley. These are subsistence mining and miners who are not formally employed by mining companies. The exhibition consists of artworks by Prof. Janine Allen-Spies and Dr André Rose.
The exhibition opening was led by renowned South African photographic Cedric Nunn who joins Mid-Morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about this interdisciplinary collaboration that is approached from the respective vantage points of the Arts and Public Health.
The Johannes Stegmann Gallery is located at the UFS Sasol Library Building in Bloemfontein and holds 150 pieces of art from various South African artists. For the past three decades, it has hosted numerous national and international art exhibitions, student exhibitions, and social justice programmes.

Artisanal mining refers to subsistence mining (miners who are not formally employed by mining companies). These workers sometimes do not have mining permits and are often regarded as ‘illegal miners’. There may also be undocumented foreign miners who are not legally authorised to work in the country. Artisanal mining has recently moved into the national spotlight, following several deeply disturbing incidents across South Africa that involve this marginalised community. The artworks interrogate the social, environmental, and occupational health and safety impact on this mining community.
