Women of Agriculture in KwaZulu-natal work towards a food secure society─── 15:58 Mon, 25 Oct 2021
Through various farming food programmes, many women across KwaZulu-Natal have been able to put food on their tables. OFM News' Lee Simmons spoke to Corporate Affairs executive, Nkonzo Mlongo, about these food programmes. Here is Mlongo…
Nkonzo Mhlongo said the agricultural sector is the most important creator of employment for women mainly in rural communities. Ensuring that women participate meaningfully in farmer organisations, restitution projects, and cooperatives will improve food security, promote local economic development, and accelerate female participation in leadership positions.
She says that the Obajani door-to-door programme was focused on supporting vulnerable households, mainly those who had sick family members and those households who were headed by children. “The programme ensured that the seven women were visited on a daily basis, and ensured that households with sick family members administered medication accordingly to the sick individual. If they needed additional medical support or health support they would then be their eyes and ears and ensure that the relevant facilities were notified,” adds Mlhongo.
She explains that the idea behind a programme like this is that in any community they are vulnerable community members or individuals where social support or services in the form of the department of health are not in close proximity. So the whole idea that the women ensure that individuals in such households were not dismissed or left to struggle by themselves but rather that they were supported in any way possible.
