The go-ahead that was given to allow for the legal growing of cannabis in South Africa for medicinal and recreational purposes, has been welcomed by the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
MEC Desbo Mohono said during a webinar, which focussed on growing cannabis in the North West, that this is an opportunity to help create jobs that will help tackle poverty in the province.
See PODCAST below
The webinar was hosted on Tuesday 28 September.
Mohono described the cannabis masterplan webinar as historic because the North West province will also be included in the list of provinces that are rooting “unapologetically for the recreational herb and its advantages…”
She further stated that cannabis growing gives farmers in the province the opportunity to participate and tap into the industry freely.
In order to implement the cannabis masterplan successfully in the province, the department will be bringing other important stakeholders on board.
With regards to the different opportunities that cannabis farming presents, Mohono shared that farmers can tap into, amongst others, hemp fibre, hemp oil and hemp seeds.
Furthermore, Mohono encouraged young people and women to grab the opportunity of obtaining a permit to grow cannabis.
