Lead inspector Zwile Zulu, from the Police Ministry, said if the SANDF or SA Police Service members wanted to stay in the houses they would have to furnish them themselves.

Last month, Police Minister Nathi Nhleko told reporters in Pretoria that the biggest portion of the money spent on the security upgrades to Zuma's home was used to build the houses, which cost R135.2m.

However, he said houses built outside the perimeter of the actual homestead for the SAPS and SANDF were not security features and should not have been lumped into the amount spent on security for the president.

Nhleko said the spending on the houses had to be followed up on.

Democratic Alliance national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said the party had a lot of questions about the homes.

"There are a lot of unanswered questions about the SANDF barracks," she told News24.

"We understand that R135m was spent here... that's about R6m per unit. So we came here to get answers."

Van Damme said the DA was on an alternative oversight visit in Nkandla.

"We came here to see the victims of the gross expenditure of public money on the president's private homes."

Zulu told reporters on Wednesday that they would have limited access to the Nkandla homestead.

The media would only be allowed into public places.

They would not be allowed to accompany the ad hoc committee on the inspection of the swimming/fire pool, the kraal/chicken run, the amphitheatre and the visitors’ lounge.
