The 400m world record of 43.03 seconds, which was set by Bloemfontein’s Wayde van Niekerk, has officially been approved by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
Van Niekerk won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the world record time in Augusts.
Niekerk shaved 0.15 seconds off the time set by Michael Johnson in Seville in 1999 to record the new benchmark.
The IAAF confirmed the world record along with four others.
The confirmed records are include 12.20 seconds for the women’s 100m hurdles set by Kendra Harrison and woman’s 10 000m time of 29 minutes 14.45 seconds set by Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana.
Anita Wlodarczyk distance of 82.29m in the women’s hammer has also been endorsed by the IAAF.
