R1.6m corruption case involving WC police top brass moved to high court─── 10:14 Fri, 12 Jun 2015
Cape Town - The corruption case involving over R1 million, against Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer and several of his top provincial police officials, will be heard in the Western Cape High Court.
Lamoer and six others appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s court on Friday where they faced a total of 109 charges related to racketeering and money laundering, involving about R1,6 million.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s Advocate Billy Downer, who is leading the State’s case against Lamoer and police brigadiers Darius van der Ross, Kolindren Govender and Logambal “Sharon” Govender, as well as Cape Town businessman Mohamed Saleem Dawjee and his son Mohamed Zameer Dawjee, asked the court that the matter be transferred to the high court for a pre-trial conference on August 28.
Downer further told the court that October 5 had been set down as the trial date for the matter to be heard in the high court in Cape Town, but that details would be finalised at the pre-trial conference in August.
He told the court that the State was ready to proceed with the matter and asked that bail for the accused, except for Mohamed Zameer Dawjee who is out on warning, be extended.
