Ernest Oppenheimer Hospital in Welkom 'will not be demolished'─── OWEN OWEN 15:46 Tue, 20 Jan 2015
Welkom - The Ernest Oppenheimer Hospital in Welkom will not be demolished, but instead, Harmony Gold is in negotiations with potential new owners.
In response to an OFM News enquiry, spokesperson Bobo Ndinisa said Harmony decided to close and/or sell the hospital as it was no longer profitable.
Ndinisa says Harmony’s pro-active health strategy resulted in the improved health of employees, which lead to the company no longer needing the many beds at EOH.
In a statement, Harmony says all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that the community is not left without health care alternatives. Most of the functions that EOH rendered have been moved to Mediclinic and St Helena hospital.
Ndinisa says their workers have access to ‘medical hubs’ at their various operations, which provide medical care as necessary.
