BREAKING NEWS: Grey College headmaster resigns | News Article

OFM news has received reliable information that the headmaster of Grey College in Bloemfontein, Deon Scheepers, resigned on Friday morning.

He will end his tenure in December this year. According to information available at this stage, he is to take a position at Wynberg Boys' High School in Cape Town, starting January.

Scheepers has been making headlines for a couple of years during his time at Grey College, which saw him, the school and the School Governing Body (SGB) involved in court battles.

OFM News reported in 2020 a judgement, penned by Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Mahomed Navsa, stated that the SGB acted beyond its statutory authority when it stripped the principal of most of his powers. At the time, Henry Büchner, the SGB chairperson announced the decision in a press release, citing the breakdown of trust between the body and the school principal.

The SGB said the principal was still free to continue conducting teaching and learning activities at the school. But the decision to take away most of his powers was later overturned by the Free State High Court.

Scheepers 'fired'

In May 2018 the Free State Education Department was in discussions to avoid a court battle over Grey College’s headmaster, after the SGB decided to strip Deon Scheepers of most of his duties, effectively sidelining him.

Department spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, told OFM News at the time it had communicated with both parties in a bid to resolve these differences and while there has been co-operation, the stripping away of Scheepers duties remains a sore point.

Following the SGB’s decision, the South African Teacher’s Union lended its voice to the matter, strongly condemning the decision.

The Institute of Race Relations on the other end launched its Education Charter on May 22, 2018, intended to give parents and communities greater control over schools by advocating for parents to have a say in appointments and school curriculums.
