Water, Sanitation vows to eradicate pit latrines | News Article

The Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, has vowed that his department is well on course to eradicate the use of pit latrines in Central South Africa, including thr Free State, Northern Cape and North West.

Mahlobo tells OFM News that sanitation is about dignity and if issues of such are not attended the department would  have not fulfilled it's obligations.
The three provinces have high prevalence use of pit latrines and disgruntled residents have previously criticised these provincial governments of failure to attended to these for year's now.
Mahlobo says the ministry will issue a detailed statement to share through details which were  discussed during the three-day session involving various municipalities, water boards amongst others in Welkom. Places such as Qwaqwa, Mangaung in the Free State have been few of areas which were under the spotlight for the use of pit latrines.

On Wednesday, Mahlobo's portfoloi's principal Minister, Senzo Mchunu, also told OFM News that Free State municipalities made concessions to water boards, and plans to address the debts are afoot.

He was addressing the media in Welkom during his three-day visit to the province where he engaged with heads of water boards, the Cooperative Governance Department (Cogta), municipal managers, and mayors.

The Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality, Welkom-based Matjhabeng Local Municipality, alongside the two water boards - Sedibeng Water and Bloem Water - admitted to payment disputes. The two water boards previously came out and publicly criticised municipalities who are struggling to pay their debts, which are running into millions of rands.
