The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, in collaboration with the Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke in the North West, yesterday hosted a walk in honour of struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada.
The legacy walk hosted by the school also formed part of their heritage celebrations to promote diversity and social cohesion.
The school, at the beginning of the academic year, drew much controversy over allegations of racism that emerged after an alleged racial segregation photo went viral on social media. The photo, which sparked racial tension in the province and in the country at large, was showing black and white pupils sitting separately according to race in a Grade R classroom.
According to parents, the school has told them that children were separated by their class teacher so that they could get to know each other first according to their race before they could be reintegrated. Although the teacher who was suspended had since resumed duties, the school is still part of the department and the South African Human Rights Commission’s ongoing investigations.
