FS commissioner condemns police killings | News Article
Free State police provincial police commissioner, Moeketsi Sempe

The Free State provincial police commissioner, Moeketsi Sempe, has reacted strongly to the killings of officers in the province and countrywide. This as the men and women in blue laid to rest Koos Mokoena on Saturday in Phuthaditjhaba.

Sempe says while en-route to his residence from visiting his mother, Mokoena received a call from a friend. Upon arrival, he was accosted by people who were with the friend and he was robbed of his vehicle.

He adds together with a friend they were taken to a certain place in that area where they murdered him. He says the police have since arrested four suspects in the matter and they are still doing a manhunt for a fifth suspect.

Sempe says police killings have a huge impact on the safety of the community. The commissioner was joined by, among others, the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini. He says through a police intelligence-driven operation the vehicle of the deceased was recovered in the neighbouring country of Lesotho.

“Criminals knows no boundaries, you have South Africans committing a crime here, crossing to Lesotho, and similarly you have criminals from Lesotho crossing [into the country]  committing a crime, so they do not know boundaries.”

“So what we are doing as the two countries [is that] we have a bilateral and a plan around [to] conduct operations across the border [called a simultaneous operation] just to deal with the scourge of crime between the two countries, he adds.

Sempe further adds that the crime involving the two countries is a challenge but they have measures in place to attend to it, especially [following] the recent theft and hijack of motor vehicles.

“From 1 September 2019 we will be putting measures wherein if one wants to cross to Lesotho with a vehicle you will have to produce evidence regarding the ownership of that vehicle [and] this could be a letter from the bank if it’s still funded by the bank or if you are not the owner of the vehicle the police will require the affidavit from the owner,” Sempe further says.
