A 45-year-old was arrested by the Free State police after he had suspected stolen livestock in his possession on Friday 1 February 2019.

The arrest was made after the Bronville police received information which lead to a house in Hanni Park where the suspect was found while allegedly slaughtering one of the sheep in his possession. A total of 11 carcasses and one live sheep were discovered at the house. Another man, believed to be the suspects’ helper, fled the scene once he spotted the SAPS members.

Police spokesperson, Mamello Mokhuoane, told OFM News the 45-year-old failed to produce proof of how or where he purchased the stock and the carcasses and the live sheep were confiscated by members of the Odendaalsrus Stock Theft Unit. A case of possession of suspected stolen property has been registered for further investigation.

“The 45-year-old has been detained and will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 4 February. The other suspect is still at large, but police appeal to anyone with information to come forward and contact the Bronville SAPS,” said Mokhuoane.
