SANDF aircraft missing─── 05:35 Thu, 06 Dec 2012
Pretoria - A military aircraft went missing en route to Mthatha yesterday (Wednesday).
SA National Defence Force spokesperson Xolani Mabanga confirmed that the SANDF had received the report about the missing aircraft.
He did not know what time it disappeared off the radar.
It had been scheduled to land in Mthatha at 10:00, yesterday morning.
It took off from Waterkloof air base in Pretoria.
Mabanga would not disclose how many people were on board "to prevent speculation".
Military helicopters had been sent to the area, but the search was suspended due to bad weather.
A ground search is underway in the Ladysmith area, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Earlier, OFM's sister station, AlgoaFM reported that the aircraft was a C47TP, an upgraded DC-3 refitted with turbine engines. It quoted an unnamed source saying 11 people were believed to be on board.
