Issues facing the Grootvlei Correctional Facility outside Bloemfontein have come into the spotlight today during the National Council of Provinces' visit to the facility.

These issues include overcrowding at the facility, staff shortages and concerns surrounding the health of prisoners. NCOP delegates have just received a report from the prison and have noted the many improvements the prison has carried out since the NCOP was last at the facility in 2017.

The prison has in its report stated that its staff vacancy rate at present stands at just above 3%. The facility has also focused on prioritising the health of prisoners, especially those with TB. When probed about the lack of pharmacists at the prison, Correctional Services Regional Commissioner in the Free State and Northern Cape, Subashini Moodley, told delegates they have one pharmacist and two community pharmacists. Moodley added the challenge isn't unique to this prison, it is a trend that can be seen throughout the country.

The OFM News team is at the Grootvlei Correction Facility where the group of delegates from the NCOP have just gone on a tea break and will shortly go on a tour of the facility. Delegates have raised concerns regarding water interruptions that have affected the facility of late but noted they were thoroughly impressed with the improvements done by the Department of Correctional Services. These include the fixing and painting of walls and the ceiling of the pharmacy, as well as the installation of rails at the facility for patients with disabilities.
