• 1955: Native Resettlement Board begins moving the first Africans from Sophiatown to their new homes in Meadowlands. It is strongly condemned by Fr Trevor Huddleston and The Star newspaper. The date is given as 10 February by another source.
• 1957: Mohammed Valli Moosa, former SA Minister of Environmental Affairs & Tourism,is born in Lenasia, Johannesburg.
• 1988: The Health Ministry says carriers of Aids will be barred from entering South Africa.
• 1992: S'kumbumso Ngwenya, ANC official, is shot dead after leaving a restaurant in the centre of Pietermaritzburg.
• 2002: Bulelani Vukwana (29) shoots and kills his girlfriend and nine others before killing himself in Mdantsane suburb of East London.
• 2002: Princess Margaret, 71, younger sister of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who visited SA with the royal family in 1947, dies.
• 2006: Muslims protest against the Danish Government outside the Town Hall in Cape Town in protest to the publication of cartoons in a Danish newspaper, which depicted caricatures of the Muslim faith.

• 1996: First episode of "Third Rock from the Sun" screened on NBC.
• 1997: Heart attacks sends Frank Sinatra back to hospital.
• 2000: 26th People's Choice Awards: Harrison Ford & Julia Roberts win (Motion Picture) and Drew Carey & Calista Flockhart win (TV).
• 2007: Apple Inc CEO, Steve Jobs announces the iPhone.
• 2002: Michael Jackson receives the Artist of the Century award at the American music awards.
• 2009: T. Llew Jones, Welsh author (b. 1915) dies.

• 1942: Joe Louis KOs Buddy Baer in 1 for heavyweight boxing title.
• 1951: Washington Capitals NBA club folds.
• 1958: In basketball Oscar Robertson (Cin) scores 56, Seton Hall team 54.
• 1975: Australia beat England by 171 runs in 4th Test to regain Ashes.
• 1988: US male Figure Skating championship won by Brian Boitano
• 2005: SA Protea captain Graeme Smith scores his second hundred in three matches and Justin Kemp hammers a spectacular 80 off 50 balls as South Africa beat England by seven runs in an enthralling fifth one-dayer.
• 2012: Lionel Messi wins the FIFA Ballon d'Or for the second consecutive year.
