A tavern owner is accused of killing several family members who were celebrating lobola negotiations after he got into a fight with a patron.

After the alleged shooting, the tavern owner is said to have taken his own life.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili reported the police in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, were called to the scene at the Mokokotlong informal settlement in the early hours of Sunday morning (13/10).

“It is reported that one of the victims went to the local tavern to buy alcohol, but he found that it was already closed. He had an altercation with the tavern owner and went back home. The owner then allegedly followed him home where the family members were still celebrating after lobola negotiations. The tavern owner entered the house and began to open fire at the family members.

“He allegedly shot and killed seven people, including a boy (3). Five family members, a neighbour and a friend were among the people who died. Four people survived the shooting, two of them – aged 1 and 31 – sustained injuries and are being treated in hospital, while the other two – aged 4 and 24 – were unharmed,” said Muridili.

“The suspect then drove back home to Evaton, where he allegedly shot himself. He was rushed to hospital but died on arrival.”

Muridili confirmed the provincial serious and violent crimes unit had registered seven counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and an inquest.
