The 95-year-old Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Prince of KwaPhindangene, Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation, and the Founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The family announced Buthelezi’s death in a statement released early on Saturday morning.

Commenting on Buthelezi’s death, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Buthelezi has been an outstanding leader in the political and cultural life of our nation, including the ebbs and flows of our liberation struggle, the transition which secured our freedom in 1994 and our democratic dispensation.

The FF Plus noted with deep regret the passing of Buthelezi, and Dr Pieter Groenewald, as leader of the party, expressed their deepest condolences to his relatives and loved ones.
“Dr Buthelezi was a true symbol of respect and dignity in Parliament. He commanded everyone’s respect with his dignified demeanour and was highly respected across political boundaries.
“He was the only Zulu leader who had ever apologised for the murders and atrocities committed against the Voortrekkers. It demonstrates that he was a leader of good character who did not shy away from the truth,” said Groenewald.

Prince Buthelezi, who served as the democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Home Affairs, passed away just two weeks after the celebration of his 95th birthday.
The family said it will engage with Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Buthelezi family and the leadership of the IFP as the necessary funeral arrangements are made. Further details in this regard will be announced in due course.
