New minimum wage for domestic workers on the cards─── 16:40 Wed, 05 Jan 2022
Domestic workers could earn over R20 an hour for the first time if the new minimum wage is adopted.
The Labour Department is calling for public comment on the new rates.
The national minimum wage commission has ordered an inflation +1 percentage point increase of the national minimum wage, which is R21.69.
If approved by Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi, the minimum wage could go up to around R23 an hour but the increase may not be enough for low earners.
Data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group shows that with the current state of inflation, South Africans are getting poorer.
