Spear fisherman recovering after being shot─── 07:48 Wed, 10 Jun 2020
A young spear fisherman is recovering in hospital after accidentally being shot through the leg while spear fishing between Seaview and Beach View yesterday.
NSRI Port Elizabeth duty controller Sean Lunnon says they received an emergency call at lunch time yesterday.
Relay ambulance services and the EMS/AMS Aeromed 3 helicopter responded along with an NSRI sea rescue vehicle.
A 20-year-old local man was then treated on the scene by paramedics after an accidental discharge in which a spear went into his leg and protruded just above the right knee.
Friends of the family, who live nearby, brought a mobile generator and an angle grinder to the scene which was used to shorten the spear to prevent any unnecessary movement.
The spear fisherman was secured into a Stokes basket stretcher and airlifted by helicopter to hospital in a stable condition.
