The North West University Eagles earned bragging rights and five valuable points last night with a 32-22 win over the University of the Free State Shimlas in Bloemfontein.

Tino Swanepoel scored a brace of tries for the team from Potchefstroom, while Naiden Jaarts dotted down and they were awarded a penalty.

The Shimlas discipline let them down with Lourens Oosthuizen and George Lourens receiving yellow cards, while Blaine Golden was shown a red card.

The Eagles coach, André Pretorius, told OFM Sport that the way they remained in control of the game was pleasuring.

“We put ourselves in a very difficult situation after starting well in previous games and not finishing it.

“What I am really proud about is that we got ourselves in the same situation and the results went our way because the guys learned from the past.”

The former Springbok flyhalf added that their wins over the past two weeks was vital ahead of their big game against the Maties in Stellenbosch next week.

“In this competition at the moment, if you don't rock up well prepared and you switch off on the game, any team can beat any other team, and I mean that.

“To get ourselves out of this predicament at we put ourselves in, we needed these two wins to get ourselves back on track. It's opened the log up a bit, and now you take it game-by-game.”

In last night’s other game in Bloemfontein the Maties beat the CUT Ixias 52-19.
