Acquitted Goedemoed prison officer wants his job back─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:12 Thu, 01 Apr 2021
The acquitted Goedemoed prison warder in the Free State, who was accused of murder and conspiracy to murder, wants to be reinstated.
His legal counsel advocate, Kenny Pretorius, tells OFM News that plans to have Mojale Letele reinstated are afoot.
He was accused of plotting to murder Nomsa Stuurman in 2019 and was later suspended after he was linked to the murder by the alleged assassin Jongikhaya Samsam.
Letele was arrested in February 2020 following a joint investigation by the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services (DSC) following claims by Samsam that the latter had promised him a fee of R100 000 and a pair of sneakers. Pretorius says it was clear from the onset that Letele had no case to answer to.
“I think it was clear from the onset that Letele was not guilty of committing this crime but obviously it was a long road to travel in order to (make a) point for him to be acquitted. But luckily we have managed to do that and I think the truth did prevail,” Pretorius adds.
Judge Pitso Molitsoane on Wednesday acquitted Letele of murder and conspiracy to commit murder and said no reasonable court would convict Letele on the evidence presented by the state. He said the testimony given by Samsam, who is convicted of brutally killing Stuurman and raping her colleague in 2019, falsely intended to incriminate Letele in the murder plot. He said despite allegations made by Samsam about the plot or contract to kill Stuurman, Samsam's story lacked details of Letele's participation in the murder plot.
