Fake tickets may be behind FNB Stadium stampede─── 06:52 Sun, 30 Jul 2017
Johannesburg - Police are investigating reports that fake tickets sold at an entrance to Johannesburg's FNB Stadium caused a riot which led to two people being killed and at least six others injured.
Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun told SABC people allegedly became unruly when they learnt that the tickets were false and started rioting.
Tickets for the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were sold out two weeks ago, and organisers had warned those without tickets not to come to the stadium.
The match continued, despite the incident, with Chiefs emerging victorious after the solitary goal by Bernard Parker in the first half.
Earlier, the City of Johannesburg blamed the stampede on late comers who overpowered security to gain access to the venue.
