Solid Campher debut not enough for Ireland─── 08:54 Fri, 31 Jul 2020
The Inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup Super League got underway on Thursday when the world champions England hosted their neighbours Ireland in the first of three ODI's at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
England won the toss and sent the Irish in to bat first, and the top order crumbled at the hands of England's David Willey who picked up four wickets in the first ten overs.
It was Irish debutant, former SA U19 all-rounder, Curtis Campher, who stepped in to add some respect to Ireland's scorecard.
The St. Peters and St. Stithians schooled 21-year-old, scored an unbeaten 59 as his team was bowled out for a poultry 172. Willey finished with figures of 5/30 in 8.4 overs.
Campher then picked up a wicket in Ireland's attempted defence of their score, but they didn't have enough runs on the board.
England scored 174/4, with Sam Billings unbeaten on 67, to hand England a 6-wicket victory.
Ireland will have a chance to rectify things when the two teams meet in the second ODI on Saturday at the Ageas Bowl.
Play is set to get underway at 15:00.
