Future of Homevale Fire Station hangs in balance─── CASEY-LEE ANTHONY 14:19 Mon, 28 Oct 2024
After a recent inspection of the Homevale Fire Station, it’s reported that the foundation is sinking and that walls throughout the structure are cracking.
While the Sol Plaatje municipality says building repairs are planned, demolition may be considered.
“Repairs are planned for this financial year 2024/25. Grant allocation will be undertaken through a bidding process,” said Sol Plaatje municipal spokesperson, Thabo Mothibi.
“In the meantime, we will also pressure Sol Plaatje to decide about the structure’s future. This includes considering the option of demolition.”

The DA has submitted concerns to the Public Prosecutor and the national minister of Cogta, Velenkosini Hlabisa.
“We hope an investigation will assist in holding the municipality and the relevant contractors and consultants accountable. The Sol Plaatje municipality has not signed off the building and the itemised checklist of outstanding tasks is yet to be completed,” said DA caucus chairperson, Elize Niemann.
The DA urges the municipality not to spend more money before proper planning has been done.
In September the municipality requested an additional R1.5 million for repairs, however, the request was opposed by the safety committee in a recent meeting. This would have been in addition to the R17 milliard already paid to two different construction companies.
