Planned Kimberley shutdown called off | News Article

The planned shutdown that was going to take place in Kimberley on Monday (28/10) was called off.

A follow-up mass meeting is expected to take place on Sunday afternoon (27/10) at the Pick n Pay Circle in Galeshewe to provide feedback to the community.

The decision to call off the shutdown follows a meeting led by the MEC of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, Bentley Vass, and Transport, Safety, and Liaison.

Participants of that meeting included the MEC of Education, Abraham Vosloo, Kimberley Action Group, Santaco, and its affiliates, as well as the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Kagisho Sonyoni, and other officials.

‘The shutdown might have had an impact on matric examinations’

“The Kimberley Action Group acknowledges the importance of education and the impact the shutdown might have had on matric examinations and the hosting of the Miss Teen Universe Pageant in Kimberley,” said Kimberley Action Group member Boyce Makodi.

“We urge the community to adhere to the call-off of the shutdown as our concerns continue to be actively addressed with the relevant authorities. We encourage all residents and stakeholders to attend the meeting on Sunday so that we can lay out a plan to ensure continued accountability.

“This is a critical moment for our community, a time to ensure that power is genuinely returned to the people. We sincerely thank all residents and stakeholders who consistently support our community, even when it may be unpopular to do so,” he said.

The planned shutdown was to address the price of electricity, service delivery, accountability of the municipality, unemployment disaster, and to stabilise the taxi industry.

It was further noted that matriculants would be protected. They would have a quiet and peaceful examination and the KAG would ensure that the shutdown doesn’t affect them at all.
