The Free State premier has called on the provincial Department of Education to urgently educate learners on what to do during thunderstorms.
Taiwe Secondary School Grade 9 learner Nomqhwaqo Mtjhali (15) lost her life when she was struck by lightning on her way home on Monday (21/10). Her friend, Dieketseng Molawa (17), sustained serious injuries.
Mtjhali, a top achiever who stood first in her class last month, dreamt of becoming a doctor. Mtjhali who was described as a top achiever, recently ranked first in her grade in September 2024. With dreams of becoming a doctor, her future was tragically cut short.

Free State premier Letsoha-Mathae visited Mtjhali’s grieving family on Wednesday (23/10) and expressed her deep sorrow. “We share in your pain and mourn with you.”
She said learners need to be better informed about thunderstorm safety to prevent similar incidents.
Accompanied by Masilonyana Mayor Dimakatso Modise, Letsoha-Mathae also visited Molawa’s family, when the Grade 11 learner recounted the “terrifying experience” and expressed how difficult it’s been to come to terms with the loss of her friend.

“I am haunted by those last moments,” she said, describing her struggle to sleep due to the trauma. While her arms and legs were severely injured, she noted that her condition had been improving.
Free State Education MEC Julia Maboya conveyed her deepest condolences to Mtjhali’s family and wished Molawa a swift recovery.
