When the Kimberley Civic Centre reopens, residents will again have access to facilities for hosting community meetings, school functions, dances, and the like.

The civic centre, situated in Square Hill, has been closed since 2009 as a result of poor security and vandalism. Construction work, which started at the beginning of the year, is near completion, and the reopening of the centre is expected soon.

Since its closing, school buildings had to house events and activities which normally would have taken place here. For example, Floors High School was used as a voting station during elections, making it difficult for teachers to continue with lessons.

‘Our youth are left wanting, leading to drugs and substance abuse’

“At this present day and age, there are no such facilities within the area for communities, or sports clubs to use,” said DA ward councillor George Joseph.

Even with the centre still closed, the local clinic and library are fully operational. Residents are hopeful the condition of roads will also be improved and the fountain, which had been damaged, restored to its original glory.

“Without school sports (no facilities or sports grounds) and a few functional sports clubs, our youth are left wanting, leading to drugs and substance abuse,” added the councillor.
