No disruptions have been reported in North West as the 2024 National Senior Certificate exams got underway on Monday (21/10).

Matrics across the country sat for their first paper, English Paper III, marking the official start of the exam season.

Last year, exams in North West were marred by incidents such as a group of learners falling ill and being hospitalised, as well as a blockade by disgruntled residents near Mahikeng that delayed the distribution of exam papers.

Education MEC Viola Motsumi visited Tlamelang Special School in Gelukspan and Kgosi Kebalepile Secondary School in Mmabatho to oversee the administration of the first paper. Tlamelang has 13 candidates sitting for the NSC exams at three different centres.

The learners receive accommodations such as extra time, scribes, and readers in accordance with the Schools Act, the National Education Policy Act, and SAIS policy. Last year, Tlamelang achieved a 77% pass rate, and the department hopes to see similar results this year.

At Kgosi Kebalepile Secondary, 149 candidates across four centres also began their exams without any issues.

Motsumi expressed her satisfaction with the smooth start to the exams, particularly noting the support provided to special needs learners, said spokesperson Mphata Molokwane. “It’s encouraging to see learners, especially those with special needs, receiving the support they need to succeed in their exams.

The MEC wished all the candidates success as they continue with their exams, adding her department’s committed to ensuring each learner has an equal opportunity to reach their academic goals.

On Monday afternoon, candidates sat for the Afrikaans Paper III, a three-hour session starting at 14:00.
