The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an impact-based level 4 warning for heavy rains and severe thunderstorms on Monday (21/10).

According to the weather advisory, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms, which may lead to heavy downpours of up to 40mm of rainfall across the Free State, North West, and the extreme eastern part of the Northern Cape. Strong, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail will accompany these conditions.

A cut-off low weather system, known for producing significant rainfall, is affecting the region, Bloemfontein weather forecaster Michael Nethavhani told OFM News. “It’s moving through the central part of the country today and tomorrow.

“The areas expected to be most impacted include the Maluti-a-Phofung District Municipality, the Lesotho border, as well as Bethlehem all the way up to Harrismith. These areas should prepare for up to 60mm of rainfall today.”

With an impact-based level 4 warning in effect, residents are advised to prepare for severe thunderstorms, which may bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, and possible hail.

The Mangaung area should expect showers and thundershowers starting today and continuing into the early hours of tomorrow, Nethavhani warned, with anticipated rainfall of about 20mm over the central Free State. The rest of the province, including the north, is under a level 2 warning, extending to parts of North West.

Injuries, threats to life

The impacts of this forecast may include flooding of roads, settlements, and low-lying areas, potentially leading to the closure of some bridges and roads. This could result in injuries and threats to life, as well as damage to infrastructure, properties (both formal and informal), vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock.

Disruptions to municipal and essential services, including power supply, and significant travel disruptions, such as route obstructions and accidents, are possible.

How to stay safe:

  • Drive carefully and reduce speed when necessary;
  • In the event of strong winds, stay away from loose debris;
  • Avoid seeking shelter under trees or tall structures during storms;
  • Monitor the SAWS website for updates on flooding developments.
