The Mangaung Metro has expressed deep sorrow following the death of a senior official who was gunned down outside the municipal offices on Thursday.

Luzuko Ntlabezo (48), a water engineer, was shot and killed while driving home with a colleague after work on Thursday (17/10) afternoon. It’s alleged Ntlabezo was followed by an unknown assailant after leaving his office and was shot fatally as he was driving off.

City Manager Sello More expressed shock and sadness at the loss of Ntlabezo, describing him as a dedicated and experienced professional who played a key role in ensuring consistent water supply to residents.

“His assassination will leave a void in the municipality. Ntlabezo was always available and went beyond the call of duty to assist those who needed help.”

Ntlabezo joined the municipality in 2012 and was involved in multiple operations to improve the city’s water services. “He once considered leaving the municipality but was convinced to stay owing to his vast knowledge and expertise,” More said.

While the motive for the killing remains unclear, More urged the public not to speculate, adding police are investigating the case. “We are allowing the police to do their part and apprehend those involved.”

Free State police spokesperson Lorraine Earle said the investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made as yet.

The ANC spokesperson for Manguang, Ncamile Nxangisa, also expressed shock after the death of Ntlabezo and called upon law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in finding the perpetrators. He said such criminal acts can instill fear amongst employees who go to work to serve with integrity and selflessness.
