The Northwest Department of Education is pleased to announce the official handover of Astro-Turf multipurpose sports facilities at Mfidikwe and Ramochana Primary Schools in Rustenburg, under the leadership of MEC Viola Motsumi.

With a combined investment of R2.5 million for each school, these state-of-the-art facilities were donated by Sibanye-Stillwater Mine and Gift of the Givers.

“This generous donation will not only promote physical well-being but also help bridge the divide between schools in rural or underdeveloped areas and those in urban areas. It fosters an equitable culture of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship among our learners. These facilities are valuable assets to the schools and the broader community, and they must be carefully guarded and preserved for future generations,” Motsumi said.

Dr. Sibusiso Msomi, Stakeholder Relations Manager at Sibanye-Stillwater, and Badr Kazi, Director of Gift of the Givers, expressed their belief in empowering communities.

They hope this donation will play a significant role in nurturing young talent and inspire the communities surrounding these schools to utilise the Astro-Turf fields, fostering the potential for renowned sportsmen to emerge from their midst.

To provide students across the province with the best resources and opportunities for success in both academics and extracurricular activities, the department remains committed to enhancing its collaborations with private entities.

After receiving the donation Motsumi expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Sibanye-Stillwater and Gift of the Givers for their significant contributions to advancing physical education and sports in the province.

Each Astro-Turf facility is fully equipped with a fence with two lockable gates, two basketball goalposts, two volleyball goalposts, one volleyball net, two mobile goals with netball nets, two soccer posts with nets, and eight 200-watt LED lights.
