A recently suspended Free State mayor has questioned the Matjhabeng Council’s decision to revoke his municipal assets and privileges.

Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha was suspended by the provincial ANC in accordance with the step-aside rule after assault charged were brought against him after an alleged incident for which Khalipha appeared again in court on Thursday (10 October 2024).

Outside court in Odendaalsrus, he claimed Matjhabeng’s action was politically motivated, and part of a broader “counter-revolutionary” agenda. He implied the decision to withdraw his municipal vehicle and bodyguard services, was to undermine his role within the community.

This comes after Council, on 25 September 2024, resolved Thanduxolo Khalipha to be placed on unpaid leave for no longer than 30 days, in light of due process following the assault charges. His use of a municipal vehicle and access to bodyguard services were revoked with immediate effect.

“They take our cars, they take our protectors – counter-revolutionary forces are at work. Why do they want to take our protectors? What is their plan?

“We are putting a very clear message to them: stop what you are doing, stop immediately. You can’t fight our people in this manner; the people who are going to suffer are our people.”

Khalipha further alleged the ANC was being influenced by faceless individuals, suggesting his prosecution was part of a larger conspiracy. He hinted he would soon reveal documents which will expose the real reasons behind his suspension, and the assault charges brought against him.

Reports indicate Khalipha has been reluctant to comply, which drew attention from, in a letter, the Independent South African National Civic Organisation (Isanco) asking Council whether municipality resources have indeed been returned. If not, Isanco wants to know why no action had been taken by Acting Municipal Manager, Lonwabo Ngoqo.

The appointment of Hlobohang Mokhomo as interim Matjhabeng mayor has been extended.
