“Reward offered to assist in bus fire investigation has been doubled.”

A reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the arsonists who gutted busses near Rustenburg has been doubled to R100,000.

Logistics company Unitrans added to the reward offered by Phokeng police to assist in the successful prosecution of alleged arsonists.

Two malicious damage to property cases have been opened at the police station outside Rustenburg, but no one has yet been arrested.

“Unitrans has offered a reward that can assist in the investigation of the two suspected arson attacks on our Chaneng and Tlaseng bus depots,” the company said. “The condition of this reward is information should lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the alleged arsonists.”

The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West condemned the recent torching of 23 buses at the Bojanala Bus Depots describing the incidents as atrocious and despicable acts of economic sabotage.

“We call on law enforcement agencies not to leave any stone unturned until all those responsible are behind bars,” said MRM convener Lesiba Kgwele.

“The impact of the losses will have far-reaching consequences on the provision of public transport for affected rural communities and greatly inconvenience commuters.”

Lawlessness must be nipped in the bud for those involved in such acts of cowardice to be unmasked and brought to account for their evil deeds, he said.

The buses belonged to the Bojanala Bus Depot – six were found burnt on Tuesday morning (1/10) at the Chaneng Depot, and a further 17 buses at Tlaseng were also set on fire. The damaged buses’ cost was estimated to be R69 million.

“Police have offered an R50,000 reward for any information that can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the alleged perpetrators in the Bojanala bus fire investigation,” said North West police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh.

“No arrests have been made yet, and we hope that the reward will be a motivator for people to come forward with information.”

Anyone with information may contact the investigating officer, Capt. Johannes Montsho, on 076 834 3531, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
