“I can’t help but cry when I think about his passing and I feel like I just have to be strong because that's what I feel he would’ve wanted.”

A week after a suspected drunk driver allegedly skipped a red robot in Kimberley, crashing into the back of a taxi carrying Patriotic Alliance members, two more occupants of the taxi have succumbed to their injuries.

Mi-Kayla Booysen, who was hospitalised due to a head injury, passed away shortly after the accident and was buried on Sunday (13/7).

A week after burying her, Cavino Matthews (23), also known as Poeksie, passed away after being hospitalised for two weeks in ICU.

“His dream was to work, saving money to buy us a house, taking care of my granny and our other siblings,” said Cavino’s sister Nadira Matthews. “He was always ready to help people, he was a people person, always had a smile on his face.”

While in hospital, Cavino suffered from a fractured bone in his leg and fractured rib bones, but an infection that spread further through his body claimed his life.

“I, as Cavino’s closest friend, am heartbroken and distraught. I’m feeling a big sense of loss because he was someone I’d see and sit with every day. We’d talk about how our days went and laugh about it,” said Tlotlo Tlotleng

“I can't help but cry when I think about his passing and I feel like I just have to be strong because that's what I feel he would've wanted.”

Accused remains in custody

The funeral service for Matthews will take place this Saturday (27/7) starting from their home in Colville.

The foreign national suspect, Collin Nhlanga (39), will be facing an additional charge of culpable homicide following the death of the third victim. “The case is postponed for 16 August and the accused remains in custody. The investigation continues,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson LtCol Sergio Kock.
