“The PEC officials will announce the name of the person who will act as the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng during Khalipha’s absence.”

The ANC in the Free State has officially addressed the controversial assault charges faced by the troubled Matjhabeng mayor.

The ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) met on Sunday (21/7) at the Kaizer Sebothelo Building in Bloemfontein. Spokesperson Jabu Mbalula said one of the key topics discussed was the allegations against Thanduxolo Khalipha. He said the PEC resolved that Khalipha should step aside in accordance with the party's “step-aside” principle.

“The PEC discussed at length the principle of step-aside as adopted by the NEC,” Mbalula said. It states: “A member, office-bearer, or public representative who has been indicted to appear in a court of law on a charge of corruption or other serious crime must immediately step aside pending the finalisation of his or her case.”

The PEC reiterated the integrity of the ANC should be protected at all times, said Mbalula.

He added the PEC officials will announce the name of the person who will act as the Matjhabeng mayor during Khalipha’s absence. They will also determine the level of Khalipha’s participation in the ANC activities pending the finalisation of the case against him.

Khalipha faces charges of common assault and crimen injuria and is due back in court again on 20 August for trial. He was released on a warning after allegedly swearing at his bodyguard in March this year.

Samwu Provincial Secretary Tiisetso Mahlatse claimed some Matjhabeng employees were coerced into supporting the mayor during his court appearance. However, Matjhabeng municipality has denied these allegations.
