“I think there are some lines visible already, but I expect the president to act on this and elaborate on the direction the 7th administration will take in terms of the whole concept of the GNU.”

As President Cyril Ramaphosa prepares to deliver the Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) on Thursday (17/7), a political analyst from North-West University (NWU) suggests that the body language displayed during the address will offer critical insights into the current political climate, the Government of National Unity (GNU), and the positions of key political players.

NWU political analyst André Duvenhage said the OPA, which coincides with the celebration of Mandela Day, will be pivotal in outlining the GNU’s major policy objectives and targets for the upcoming year. Duvenhage noted that South African democracy is entering a new phase, with a significant focus on the GNU.

“I’m expecting a number of things,” Duvenhage said. “We have seen policy directions from the cabinet Lekgotla focusing on integrated economic growth, good governance, the rule of law, responsible government, strong local government structures, and addressing economic growth and social challenges like unemployment and inequality.”

“I think there are some lines visible already, but I expect the president to act on this and elaborate on the direction the 7th administration will take in terms of the whole concept of the GNU.”

Duvenhage further said he also anticipates that the strategies outlined will face challenges, particularly from two opposition parties. “We may see a disruptive role coming from the side of the EFF and the MK party. It will also be interesting to see how ANC members react to the concept of GNU and the president. There is no doubt that there is resistance within the ANC, as articulated by the SACP, a close alliance member of the ANC,” he added.

Kedibone Phago, another NWU political analyst, said he expects the OPA to provide a detailed outline of what the GNU has agreed to in principle. This would offer direction in security and economic clusters, among others. Phago emphasised that the public wants Ramaphosa to address strengthening the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), especially in following up on high-profile cases emerging from commissions of inquiry, including the Zondo and SARS commissions.

“I foresee a stronger NPA, almost reminiscent of the days of the Scorpions. While it will take time to strengthen, I think we will see very strong signs, with the NPA now commanding some level of respect,” Phago said.

He also highlighted that the public is eager to hear the President’s plans regarding the home affairs sector, particularly in dealing with the crisis of illegal immigrants, and the implementation of National Health Insurance (NHI).
