“Mahlophe must do away with corruption and nepotism as the municipality is on the verge of collapsing.”
The Klerksdorp-based City of Matlosana Local Municipality has appointed a new mayor, Fikile Mahlophe, who received a warm welcome. His appointment comes after the resignation of former mayor James Tsolela.
Mahlophe, who was elected unopposed, has been serving as a Member of the Mayoral Committee for Electrical and Engineering.
The Speaker of the Council, Stella Mondlane, has congratulated Mahlophe on his new role and wished him well.

DA caucus leader in Matlosana, Johannes le Grange, told OFM News they will support him and hope he will be able to bring changes and boost the economy of the municipality.
Municipal spokesperson, Ntswaki Makhetha, said the mayor commenced his duties on Thursday and is expected to announce his Members of the Mayoral Committee in due course.
The EFF North West’s secretary, Papiki Babuile, also congratulated the new mayor, who said he has learnt from his predecessor and that he brings fresh blood.
Dear MM of Matlosana and Mr Acting Mayor of Matlosana. You are accused of being a power couple and I am tempted to concede. You have bought journalists to ensure the downfall of the Mayor in the name of fighting corruption, little did we know that you are in fact executing your… pic.twitter.com/bBoicSisJU

Babuile told OFM News that Mahlophe must do away with corruption and nepotism as the municipality is on the verge of collapsing and that they will not hesitate to call for his removal if he doesn't improve service delivery for the people of Matlosana.
Many previous mayors in Matlosana have not been able to finish their term of office. Mike Khaoue finished his term under duress between 2011 and 2016.
African Congress for Transformation’s (ACT) North West Chairperson, Lopang Rothman, also indicated that they welcome the mayor with hope and trust that stability will prevail and that he will use his experience to ensure the people of Matlosana receive the service they deserve.

“We might not be part of the council, but being part of the community means we will use everything at our disposal to advocate for the well-being of the people of Matlosana, and we believe the mayor will also be at liberty to engage us when we request it,” said Rothman.
The municipality faces tough times as the municipal manager and chief executive officer are suspended due to corruption-related charges.
