"A police member escorted a suspect from the courtroom to the cells on Tuesday, after unlocking the burglar door of the cell the officer was pushed and overpowered by a group of detainees who were inside the cell and they fled.”
The police in North West are still on the lookout for five of eight detainees who escaped from the Mogwase Magistrate's Court holding cells.
Eight suspects escaped from the cells on Tuesday (10/10) while awaiting trial. Three of the eight accused, Lebogang Mokotleng (27), Tshepang Raselemane (25), and Katlego Mkitle (26) were re-arrested. Mokotleng and Raselemane were arrested at the Mogwase Taxi Rank on Wednesday morning.
Before the escape, Mokotleng was arrested for robbery, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Raselemane was facing charges of robbery, possession of a firearm, and possession of suspected stolen property.
Katlego Mkitle (26), who is one of the suspects, was traced and arrested at a relative’s place in Mamerotse Village, Phokeng, today. Before he was re-arrested, Mkitle was facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, attempted murder, and possession of suspected stolen property.
North West police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, told OFM News a police member escorted a suspect from the courtroom to the cells on Tuesday. After unlocking the burglar door of the cell, the officer was pushed and overpowered by a group of detainees who were inside the cell and they fled.
The five men who are still missing are, Tebogo Mosito (29), Letlatsa Mpota (31), Katlego Mafatlhe (35), Keitumetsi Lekolomi (25), and Thabang Matlho (25). People who might have information on the whereabouts of the above-mentioned suspects are requested to contact Investigating Officer Shimane Kubyadi (082 856 1087) or visit the nearest police station.
