The Metro's spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, said the South African Weather Service has issued a level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms for Wednesday, from 11:00 to 19:00. “A cut-off weather system is moving through the central interior. As a result, a line of windy storms is expected to develop and move eastwards with possible structural damages in the path,” reads the notice.

The metro has requested all residents to pay attention to alerts or warnings and follow precautions:

• Reduce speed and switch on headlights

• Avoid using electronic devices connected to an electrical outlet

• Do not seek shelter under trees or near electrical poles

• Pedestrians should be careful when crossing the road

• Avoid water and crossing rivers/streams where water is above your ankles

“We also urge households to open or make pathways to allow water to flow out of their yards,” added Khedama. Residents should call the Mangaung Fire Department in cases of emergency on 051-406-6666 or 051-409-9600, or toll-free on 107. The number for an ambulance is 10177.

In late May this year, Mangaung residents were also warned of severe thunderstorms, with possible strong winds, hail, and heavy downpours. The severe weather conditions were experienced over the western parts of both the Free State and the North West.
