Popcru hosts roadshow in Grootvlei prison─── ZENANDE MPAME 16:02 Tue, 30 May 2023
Free State Popcru hosted a presidential roadshow at the Grootvlei Department of Correctional Services in Bloemfontein, on Monday 29 May 2023.
The roadshow aimed to address political and societal issues that plague police, prison and traffic officials, and Popcru members.
The Mess Hall of the Correctional Service was full of SAPS members, traffic officials, prison officials, union members, and the Free State Popcru President Zizamele Cebekhulu-Makhaza.
One of the issues mentioned in the speech of the president was that public service workers did not get a salary increase for four years.
“The Department of Correctional Services, the SAPS, and the Traffic Department all have a shortfall of staff, thus making the workload unbearable to those in the workforce,” says Makhaza.
A promotion policy has been signed to make sure that members who are on the ground are being promoted to higher ranks, to stop the department from taking people from outside who do not know the culture of the Correctional Services.
Makhaza says that female members of the Correctional Services are not being promoted and there isn’t any growth for them, so the policy that has been signed will address that.
“We would love to see this policy become a success, but most importantly we want to see women in positions of influence.”
After his speech, a dialogue session was opened where traffic, SAPS, and Correctional Services members raised their issues in their workplaces and they were addressed by the president.
